Wednesday October 31, 2018

This review was originally published in Edge issue 6, March 1994 Neo-Geo owners guess what? A new game has arrived and it’s not at all what you’d expect. Falls and Trips

Falling is very common to the very young and the very old ones. If the person becomes drowsy, vomits and becomes unconscious after falling, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Falling Objects

Are your children starting to walk around alone? If yes, you must be watchful. Make sure to keep those pointed objects, dish towels and tablecloth edges out of reach to prevent any possible accident.

Sprains

A sprain happens when a ligament twisted, stretched or torn. Mostly, it hit the knees, wrist and ankles. Apply an ice pack on the affected area, rest and give it time to heal.

Bruises

Even if a fall is not quite serious, it might lead to painful bruising. Applying ice bag/pack to the affected area can help reduce swelling. Feeling some pain in the area or any restriction in movement could possibly hide more serious situation like broken bones. So if these symptoms are present, medical advice is a must.

Cuts

Any cut on the skin is the hardest thing for the kids. A cut means blood and you know kid’s reaction to that. Apply antiseptic to the affected area and apply pressure to stop bleeding. If the wound stops bleeding after putting some pressure on it, it means that it is only a minor wound and there’s no need to stitch.

Poisoning

Ingestion of hazardous substances ( household products, cosmetics and medicines) at home could lead to poisoning. Always keep anything in place and out of reach to children especially those chemical products to avoid serious problems.

Burns

If your child is age 5 or below, you must be watchful because they are prone to get burns. Hot drinks are the most common cause. Irons, hair straighteners, matches, and open fires are very dangerous too, so keep your children away from them. If it happens, put the burnt area under cold running water for 10 minutes and then do the assessment. Always keep cling film or clean plastic bag in your first aid kit and use them to cover burns, keeping the area clean and promote healing.

Glass-associated injuries

When designing or decorating your home, you should consider having a safe environment for young kids. Glass materials around the house are not safe for children and broken glass might cause serious cuts to family members. Make sure to follow safety standards when deciding to use glass in your doors, shelves or doors.

Choking

Children love to put something in their mouth and swallow it. Be aware of this because choking is a common hazard and it can lead to some serious issues. If you are having difficulty removing the object in their mouth, call 999 immediately.

Drowning

Young children should not swim alone. Make sure not to leave your kids near ponds or any body of water unsupervised to avoid any case of drowning.
